Halloween Free Tour

SEASONAL SPECIAL

Saturday 26 October Thursday 31 October
8.30 – 10.30pm.

FROM A HAUNTED HOUSE TO TO SCARY GRAVEYARDS, THE HAGUE MAY BE YOUR PERFECT SETTING FOR HALLOWEEN. BUT WHAT DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT THE SCARY STORIES OF OUR CITY'S HISTORY?

Here's your perfect combo; you let us scare you and we will drop you off at a choice of The Hague's best halloween parties to quench your (blood) thirst!

While the celebrations of Halloween are rather new to the Netherlands, we have celebrated St. Martin for so many years. Traditionally on November 11, some neighbourhoods in our city still organise this trick or treat feast, where the kids carry their hand made lanterns (or ssshh... they might buy them at Hema) and walk from door to door. They sing a song and get candy or fruit in return. St. Martin is mostly a feast to celebrate sharing with the poor and needy.

Halloween on the other hand, is ‘the new kid on the block’ as an American event, rapidly gaining ground here in the Netherlands. The origin of Halloween is not quite clear. The most commonly accepted idea that it is a celebration of the Celtic new year on November first. The spirits need to be scared away and it is done by dressing up with scary masks and costumes. And even though today’s Halloween in the States may be less about Draculas and vampires – any type of dress up ranging from cute to heroic is accepted – in The Hague it is celebrated with the scary costumes. And that makes sense. Most parts of Europe already celebrate Carnaval, where dressing up is part of the tradition.

Back to The Hague. Our city has so many scary stories. Spies, murders, haunted houses and of course, the place that stands for pure fear: the Prison Gate Museum. Do you know how many people were locked up there in the dark and dirty gaols? About the torture and executions? Who was the lady that was murdered and is still to this day buried under our Inner Court, right by the Knight's Hall? Which couple murdered their boss and got caught to have one of their heads mimicked and beaten on, as part of a famous village fair activity?

Join our Halloween Free Walking Tour on Saturday 26 October Thursday 31 October. Put your fangs on and let us bring a shiver down your spine! We will go off the beaten track to hear stories of places you may have passed many times before, but will never see the same again. We will also go to some well known highlights of The Hague, not just to enjoy the beautiful evening view, but with stories you probably never heard before.

This tip based tour starts at 8.30 and ends at 10.30pm. But then the party isn't over for sure! On Saturday the 26th we will take you to your party at the end of our tour! Either join the fun at The Hague's Hostel awesome bar downstairs, called De Gekke Geit (the Crazy Goat) or come to the best English Pub in town to party: Fiddler's! Both fantastic international bars, De Gekke Geit is cosy and small, they often host great live music. The Fiddler is the largest international pub of the city, offering over 200 different bottled beers and an impressive fifteen beers on tap. If you join The Fiddler's Halloween party dressed up, the first shot is on the house!
